Spring has sprung, and it's here with spring cleaning. While you focus on purging the inside of your home of dirt and clutter, don't forget to spring clean your roof. An asset that provides layers of protection to you and your family is not something to neglect. The good news is that spring maintenance is nothing too complicated.
Inspect Your Roof
Inspect your roof at least twice a year. It's recommended to have an inspector check it out in the spring and the fall-- before and after the extreme weather conditions in the winter and summer. A professional will be able to tell you if there are potential problems with your roof and help you make the decisions for your next steps.
Watch for Tree Limbs
Tree limbs should never be able to touch your roof. The branches are hazardous and can scrape against the shingles, loosening their protective granules.
Clean Off Debris
Leaves, pine needles, and anything that can collect moisture need to be removed from your roof. Debris like this collects moisture, blocks your gutters, and can cause unnecessary additional weight to your roof.
Check for Discoloration
Discolored streaks along your roof indicate the presence of mold, algae, and/or fungus. When left alone for too long, your roof will begin to deteriorate and fall victim to leaks. It is important to address the presence of these streaks, but do not pressure wash your roof. Instead, call out a professional.
Check the Ventilation Inside Your Home
If your attic doesn't have proper ventilation, your roof could face problems with mold and ice damming. As moisture in the air rises, it needs a place to escape. A good rule of thumb is to have one square foot of ventilation per 300 square feet of attic space.
Don't Delay Spring Cleaning Your Roof
Sooner is always better when it comes to your roof. The sooner you have an inspector come out, the sooner you'll be able to address any potential problems before they become worse.
